Funding Your PhD
Tuition costs generally increase annually. To estimate how much it will cost you to complete the CSSE program, visit the Registrar’s Tuition & Fees webpage and select either Oregon Resident or Non-Resident, then Graduate (Education, Masters/Doctoral) and click on the appropriate year/term button. A full load for graduate students is between 9-16 credits and most students complete their program of study in six academic years, which would be 18 terms without taking classes in the summer.
The CSSE program guarantees four years of fiscal support for admitted PhD students, primarily through Graduate Employee (GE) appointments. GE appointments cover full tuition plus a modest stipend during the academic year. The Division of Graduate Studies also posts other fellowships and scholarships on their website.

Travel and Writing Funding Support
The Education Studies travel grant provides funding opportunities to full-time CSSE doctoral students presenting at or attending professional academic conferences.
Priority for funding goes to students:
- attending high quality conferences
- presenting rather than attending
- focusing on a topic relevant to their dissertation
- assuming a primary lead in authorship
Funding is available only during the academic year. Applications will be accepted and reviewed from September 16 through May 31.
Ten travel/writing grants are funded per academic year to the extent the allocated budget allows. Standard awards are usually $200 but requests for more will be considered on a case by case basis.
Students will receive a maximum of one award per academic year.
Applications must be submitted a minimum of four weeks in advance of the first day of travel.
How to apply
- Print and complete application form with your advisor. The Faculty Recommendation portion of the application is to be completed by your advisor with a statement of support and signature.
- Attach the conference information and proof of attendance to the application.
- Submit application to CSSE Director, Jerry Rosiek for approval.
- If approved, you will receive and email stating the award and amount.
- Your student account will be credited the awarded amount after the event has occurred.
